Solar Panel Detach & Reset — a new roof under your panels, without starting over on the solar.
If your roof needs replacement and you have solar panels, they've got to come off first. We handle the detach, the reroof, and the reset — safely, and coordinated with your solar company.
Why detach & reset is its own job
You can't just re-roof around solar panels. The shingles or tile underneath them are the ones that need replacing the most, and every panel foot mount penetrates your roof — meaning it's flashed, sealed, and part of the waterproof system that a reroof rebuilds.
A proper detach & reset removes the panels, stores them safely on-site, replaces the roof (including new mounting flashings), then reinstalls the panels to the correct torque and tilt. We coordinate with your solar installer for electrical disconnect and reconnect if they require it, or handle low-voltage disconnect ourselves if the system allows.
What you're actually paying for.
You'll see a wide range of quotes for solar detach & reset — from suspiciously cheap to eye-wateringly expensive. Here's what separates a proper job:
Electrical shutdown & isolation
PV systems are live in daylight. Every panel gets DC-isolated before hands touch it.
Panel-by-panel labeling
Panels are numbered as they come off so they go back in the same order and orientation — critical for microinverter and optimizer systems.
New flashings, not reused
Original mount flashings don't get reused. New flashings are installed as part of the reroof, so your solar warranty stays intact.
System restart & verification
After reinstall, the system is powered back up and production is verified against expected output before we call it done.
How it goes, start to finish.
- 01
Coordination with your solar installer
We contact your solar company to check warranty terms and confirm who handles the electrical disconnect.
- 02
Detach & secure storage
Panels are removed, labeled, and stored on-site (or on the roof away from work area) with weather protection.
- 03
Roof replacement
Full tear-off and reroof happens on the exposed decking, including new mount flashings for panel reinstall.
- 04
Panel reinstall & re-flash
Panels return to their original positions on new flashings, mounted to spec.
- 05
System restart & production check
System is re-energized, monitored, and verified against pre-detach production baseline.
What detach & reset runs
Detach & reset itself typically runs $75–$150 per panel in the San Antonio market, plus the cost of the underlying roof replacement. Full projects (replacement + D&R for a typical 20-panel system) often add $1,500–$3,500 on top of the reroof.
We quote D&R as a line item within your reroof estimate, so you can see exactly what it's costing.
What affects the number
- Number of panels
- Panel type and weight (standard vs. bifacial, glass-glass)
- Mounting system (rail-based vs. rail-less)
- Whether your solar installer requires their own electricians for disconnect/reconnect
- Roof pitch and access
Questions we hear often.
Will this void my solar panel warranty?
Not when done correctly. We coordinate with your solar installer and use new flashings; most warranties stay intact. Some solar companies require their own crew for disconnect — we accommodate that.
How long is my system offline?
Typically 3–7 days from detach to reset, depending on roof complexity and weather. We plan the reroof timing to minimize the offline window.
Can you re-aim or upgrade panels while they're off?
We can reposition panels within the same mount footprint. Actual system upgrades (new panels, new inverter) need your solar installer — but doing the reroof is the ideal time for them to schedule that.
What if my roof was originally installed with the solar on it?
Common situation. Removing the panels often reveals decking or underlayment in worse shape than expected — because it hasn't been inspectable. We'll show you what's underneath before committing to the reroof scope.
