What counts as storm damage
Storm damage isn't one thing. It's whatever a Hill Country front decides to throw at a roof. Straight-line winds lift and crease shingles along the edges and ridges. Hail bruises the asphalt mat without leaving an obvious hole. Falling limbs and debris punch through decking. Heavy, sustained rain finds every weak seam in flashing that a lighter rain never would have found.
Because storm damage shows up in so many different forms, a proper storm inspection covers the whole roof system, not just the obvious spot. We check the field of every slope for wind lift and hail bruising, every flashing detail for water intrusion, gutters and downspouts for impact and debris, and the attic for water tracking that hasn't shown up on the ceiling yet.

What should I do right after a storm damages my roof?
Protect what is inside and stay off the roof.
Move furniture and electronics clear of any drip, put a container under the leak, and photograph everything including ceiling stains and anything visible from the ground. Then call for an inspection so we can document it the same way.
Do not climb up to look. Wet or damaged roofs are how people get hurt, and a homeowner walking a damaged roof adds damage that wasn't there before. We have the harnesses, ladder policy, and experience to do it safely.
If water is actively coming in, that is an emergency and we tarp as soon as it is safe. For everything else, a normal storm inspection within a day or two is the right move.
How much wind does it take to damage a roof?
Less than most people expect, because manufacturer wind ratings are lab-tested under ideal conditions and a real roof is only as good as its age, nailing, and sealant.
Damage usually starts at edges, ridges, corners, and rakes where uplift is strongest, not in the middle of a slope. Those are the places we inspect first after a wind event.
A properly nailed newer roof with good sealant strips handles a lot. An older roof with weakened sealant strips can lose shingles in a routine front, even though the same wind wouldn't touch a newer install.
The ground-level tells are shingles in the yard, visible creases or lifted tabs on the slopes you can see, and gutters pulled loose or dented. If you see any of those after a storm, get an inspection.
